"The Truth About the Dangers of Hair Relaxers for Black Women A Must See Discussion"

A study has found that Black women who used lye-based hair relaxers at least 7 times a year for 15 or more years have a 30% increased risk of breast cancer. The study was based on data from Boston University's Black Women's Health Study, which followed over 50,000 African American women for more than 25 years and found that 95% of them reported using lye-based relaxers and 2,311 of them developed breast cancer. The use of these products by Black women is due to white-centric beauty standards and anti-Black hair discrimination, which has resulted in many Black women using hair and skin treatments that pose risks to their health without their knowledge. A research by the nonprofit Environmental Working Group found that one in 12 beauty and personal care products marketed to Black women in the US contain hazardous ingredients such as lye, parabens and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, and fewer than 25% of products marketed to Black women scored low in an assessment of their potentially hazardous ingredients. The EWG created a database of personal care products targeted towards Black people with information about their ingredients and potential problems, but more action needs to be taken by personal care companies and the government to keep Black women safe and healthy.
