In this video, I give a short explanation of the concept of resonance in the voice and also show you a real time graph of the overtones in my voice - a must see!

When you hear someone's voice and it kind of perks your ears up and it makes you go, oh wow, listen to that sound. It's so deep, it's so full, it's so rich, you are reacting to the resonance and overtones in the voice. That type of a voice commands attention. It commands respect and people listen more because it attracts us on a certain level.

For us to have the greatest experience of our own voice, it is very helpful for us to be able to build up that resonance. So let's take a look at what resonance actually is.

Resonance is the intensity or quality of the tone you hear and feel when you make sound. It is caused by the reverberation of sound waves from your vocal cords, which are vibrating very fast.

So when you start to make sound, what happens is that sound will interact or bounce against back of your throat, your hard palate, your sinus cavities and it will start to become more amplified and develop more overtones.

The more space that we can create in the back of our throats and in our mouths, the more sound is going to develop and create more of those beautiful overtones and resonance. And it will give you and your listeners a more full experience of your voice.

Another thing that I think is really fascinating is that if you listened to the sound of your voice right as it was produced at the level of the vocal folds, before it comes up into all of your resonating chambers of your face and your sinuses, it would sound so different.

Have you ever heard one of those little ultra light airplanes? They have a funny sound, like a buzzing. Believe it or not, that's what your voice would sound like. What makes your voice so uniquely yours is the shape of your throat, the shape of your mouth, your sinuses, your personality, your life experiences. In other words, your unique facial and throat structure.

That's why your voice is as unique as your fingerprint. There has never been and there will never be a voice like yours!
