Tropical disease and vector expert Dr. Lorrin Pang explains horizontal transmission, or “horizontal spread,” of Wolbachia bacteria between hosts. He answers questions about Wolbachia causing increased pathogen infection in mosquitoes and other hosts, and whether or not the state is aware of the risks of horizontal transmission. Pang points out concerns about mosquitoes becoming a better vector of West Nile virus, and concerns about the spread of the Wolbachia bacteria to mosquitoes that transmit dengue fever and Zika virus.
