A slender if significant victory came at quite the cost for Manchester United. Just days after losing his playmaker Christian Eriksen to injury for three months, Erik ten Hag will now likely have to do without his influential midfield sentry Casemiro for the next three matches after the Brazilian was sent off during a tempestuous second half against Crystal Palace.

With Scott McTominay sidelined for another couple of weeks and Donny van de Beek out for the rest of the season, United’s midfield is being stretched to its limits.

After Marcus Rashford doubled United’s advantage shortly after the hour mark following Bruno Fernandes’s seventh minute penalty, Ten Hag’s side appeared to be cruising.

But the game turned on its head when Jeffrey Schlupp sparked a 20-man melee by sending Antony careering into the perimeter boards.

Antony’s team-mates reacted angrily to the challenge and Schlupp hovering over the winger and suddenly both sets of players were squaring up. Casemiro shoved Schlupp, then Antony barged into the Palace midfielder as pushing and shoving ensued.
