Key factor inhibiting athletic performance:
-core body temperature above 38C [100F]
-inhibit pyruvate kinase
[enzyme at end of glycolysis]
-needed for ATP
-push pyruvate kinase into Krebs cycle
to create more ATP
-will eventually shut down muscle contraction

Important if high intensity exercise...
-over 20 minutes
-or in the heat
Ability to reduce rise of core body temp will
dramatically improve performance
"If in competition...cool 3 special areas:
-face
-palms of hands
-bottoms of feet
have glabrous skin"

Glabrous skin contains special
-blood vessel AVAs
[arterio-venous anastomoses]
-bypass capillaries, so
"directly pass blood from veins to arteries
& arteries to veins"
Cooling is much quicker
Larger diameter: much more blood flow
[heat or cold] across system

Studies: check whether cooling glabrous
skin increases athletic performance
Some results
-pull ups increase 2x
-bench press reps up 40%
-max bench press over 20%
-walk in heat 4 to 14 minutes longer
-due to glabrous skin cooling

More areas cooled, more cooling of
core body temperature
-allows longer performance
"There are also pre-cooling protocols"
-one key to enhancing performance
"Important: don't over-cool these areas
[will vasoconstrict AVAs so can't bring cold]

If using frozen can or ice pack:
-max 10 seconds at a time
-pass ice pack back & forth/10 seconds each
-at each break in action
Consider also cooling bottoms of feet, face
"The more glabrous skin cooled
at same time = better results
-especially high intensity
-and in heat
