On Friday, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) demanded that Russia adhere to the final nuclear arms control agreement they have with the United States. This treaty, known as the New START Treaty, was ratified in 2010 and restricts the amount of long-range nuclear warheads each country can possess to 1,550. Along with this, NATO firmly requested that Russia permit the necessary on-site inspections to resume, as detailed by the pact. This would enable both nations to keep each other in check, ensuring that the New START Treaty is properly followed. As Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has noted, these inspections are incredibly important for "building trust and transparency between the two countries".
