The word "Manul" is of Mongolian origin, and its scientific name, Otocolobus, comes from the Greek word meaning "bad ears."
When Peter Simon Pallas first described this cat, he thought that the cat was the ancestor of the domestic Persian race because of its long fur, stocky body, and flat face.
