Richard Sterne was a bishop in the Church of England during the reigns of three kings: Charles II, James II and William III. Sterne wrote about his experiences and observations in his books, which have been influential in English literature. In this video, a narrator discusses Sterne's life and work, highlighting his importance in English history.

Reverend Richard Sterne was a renowned English divine and Archbishop of York who was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire in 1596 , during the reign of Elizabeth I, to Simon and Margery, the daughter of Gregory Walker.

He was educated at the local free Grammar school until 1611, when he went onto gain a scholarship at Trinity College, Cambridge, where graduated in 1614. Then he went on to obtain his Master of Arts in 1618. He became a fellow of Corpus Christi in 1620 and was elected as a fellow at Benet College Cambridge in 1623. He then went on and gained his Bachelor of Divinity in 1625.

During this time Richard advanced his career steadily and came into the favourable notice of William Laud, who made Richard his personal chaplain when he became the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1633. That same year Richard was appointed Master of Jesus College, Cambridge and was given Rectorships in both Yeovilton and Harleton in 1634 through the Archbishops influence. When he became a Doctor of Divinity in 1635, Richard Sterne’s career seemed secure.
