The Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC between the city-state of Athens and the Persian Empire. The Persian army, led by Darius I, landed on the plain of Marathon with the intention of invading Athens. The Athenian army, led by Miltiades, defeated the Persians in a surprise attack and forced them to retreat to their ships. The Athenians then pursued and destroyed the Persian fleet, effectively ending the threat of invasion. The Battle of Marathon is considered a significant victory for Athens and a turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars. It also gave rise to the legend of the "Marathon runner" who is said to have run from Marathon to Athens to bring news of the victory.
