Revelation
Pt. 1 - Remove The Curtain
Introduction
Welcome | New2Sheridan to 97000
No book in the Bible has produced as much fear and fascination, confusion and curiosity as the Book of Revelation
The Book of Revelation was not meant to confuse of frighten
The Book of Revelation is meant to give you a Revelation
Revelation 1:1
Revelation = Apokalupsis (apocalypse)
KALUPSIS - to cover, curtain, veil
APO - away, off
APOKALUPSIS - take away the cover, curtain or veil
Revelation is to see something NEW that has always been there
John has seen Jesus (miracles, death, burial, resurrection and ascension)
John will see Jesus as he has never seen Him before
Primary relation of the Book of Revelation = Jesus
Easy to get sidetracked and lost in the Book of Revelation
Read Revelation 1:1 in Greek Bible
Wrong emphasis = Wrong pronunciation
Revelation 1:1-8
Revelation 1:1-4
This Book is meant to be a blessing; 7 beatitudes
Revelation is a blessing IF
Begins with this statement and ends with it
Revelation 22:6-7
Revelation 22:18-19
Serpent took away; Eve added
Revelation 1:4
Map of Asia Minor on TV Screens
Not 7 Holy Spirits
Only 1 Holy Spirit (1st Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 4:4)
7 Spirits? Sevenfold Spirit
Revelation 4:4-5
To understand Revelation you must know the Old Testament or you will be lost
Zechariah 4:1-6
Same image in that John saw
Isaiah 11:1-3
Sevenfold Spirit has Seven Qualities
1. Spirit of the Lord
2. Spirit of Wisdom
3. Spirit of Understanding
4. Spirit of Counsel
5. Spirit of Might
6. Spirit of Knowledge
7. Spirit of the Fear of the Lord
We will be jumping a TON back to the Old Testament
Revelation 1:4-8
Will come back to this
Revelation 1:9-10
Revelation 1:9
John draws attention to himself; 3 times in 9 verses (It's really me)
Could have leveraged his resume and position; last living apostle
Brother = Adelphos
ADELPHOS - out of the same womb; military comrade
Popularized by Alexander the Great
Companion = Partner
Suffering = Thlipsis
THLIPSIS - heavy pressure, suffocation, tribulation
Why Tribulation? Word of God & testimony of Jesus
Why does the Devil attack you? Word of God & testimony of Jesus
Was = Ginomai
GINOMAI - taken off guard; taken by surprise
How did John end up on the Isle of Patmos?
Church History
Disciples get scattered because of persecution
John left w/Mary for Asia
Paul was the presiding Apostle in Asia; planted most of the churches
Emperor Nero executed Paul in 67 AD
John then moved to Ephesus and became the Bishop of Asia after Paul's death
John lived on a hill above the Temple of Artemis
6,000 priests and priestesses offered sacrifices to demon gods there
John lived right above this
You don't have to be afraid of witches, the occult; Greater is He that is in you
John lived about above actual demonic sacrifices for 30 years
John gets arrested around 93 AD
He is now in his nineties and has to go to Rome to stand before the Emperor Domitian
John refuses to worship Domitian and gets thrown in a vat of boiling oil
John is unburned; exiled as a political prisoner to the Isle of Patmos
Patmos = no vegetation and full of criminals; 2 types of crimes
John has to fend for himself; cave of the revelatory under and ancient temple of Artemis
John starts a church on Patmos
In this cave while he is suffering he gets his greatest revelation
In our suffering we usually get our greatest revelations
C.S. Lewis said, "God whispers to us in our pleasure, but He shouts to us in our pain."
John suffered there for 18 months
Domitian dies and John is granted amnesty; he moves back to Ephesus
But during those 18 months, he got a revelation
Revelation 1:10
Lord's Day = Sunday?
KURIAKOS - Imperial Day to worship the Emperor
Once a month everyone was required to worship the Emperor and confess that Caesar is Lord
Romans 10:9-10
Possible that on the day everyone was worshipping a false King in the Empire, the real King surprised John and gave him a new Revelation of who He was
John went through some terrible things; saw some terrible things to come
After leaving Patmos, he went back to Ephesus and wrote some letters (1st, 2nd & 3rd John)
1st John 5:4-5
John had been through some terrible things; he saw some terrible things to come
Yet, he says we have a faith that overcomes it all
You might be suffering tonight, heavy pressure; you have a faith that overcomes
