Why You Shouldnt Point a Pistol At An Officer

On January 20, 2023, at about 11:30 p.m., San Diego Police Officers conducted a traffic stop at the 1800 block of Logan Ave. Officers contacted the driver, a 37-year-old male. During the traffic stop the man suddenly sped away in the vehicle heading east on Logan Ave. A short pursuit ensued for about two blocks. The vehicle came to a stop around the 2000 block of Logan Ave. The man exited the driver's side of the vehicle with a handgun and an officer involved shooting occurred.

As the man fell to the ground the handgun dropped from his person. Officers ordered the man to move away from the handgun, but he did not comply. A police K9 was used to pull the man away from the firearm. Officers provided medical aid to the man until paramedics arrived. The man was transported to a local hospital for further treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts from hospital staff, the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The Sheriff's Homicide Unit responded and has assumed responsibility of the Officer Involved Shooting investigation. No officers were injured. The suspect has been identified, but his identity in not being released pending family notifications. There is Body Worn Camera footage of the incident.
