Beavertail fairyshrimps - Day 4
16
Beavertail fairy shrimp metanauplii on their third day after hatching. Larvae have elongated bodies and are able to eat. Their resemblance with brine shrimps is astonishing, much more similar than other freshwater branchiopoda larvae.
These bugs are endemic to middle west. Once they are sexually mature, females lay eggs (cysts) after hatching which must undergo a dissociation period before resuming embryo development.
The scientific name of the species is Thamnocephalus platyurus.
