The Akademik Alexander Karpinsky seismic survey vessel, has left the Port of Cape Town before its planned fossil fuel exploration in Antarctica. Despite a mining ban, the Russian ship has built oil and gas maps of the endangered marine sanctuary and the Southern Ocean. Its airguns may be detrimental to unique species in the globally important conservation area.
