The white tiger is a rare form of the Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), a subspecies of tiger found in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. They are not a separate species. In contrast, pale coloration is the result of a recessive mutation in one gene, meaning two copies of the gene are required to express the trait.
