Three Little Kittens: Solving Malfunctions

Regardless of how reliable a weapon system is, eventually, it will fail. Wether it’s from environmental conditions, lack of preventive maintenance, a user induced malfunction, or just plain old bad luck, it’s going to happen and understanding the steps needed to solve that malfunction, with immediate and remedial action are important.
In this drill sequence, immediate action (tap rack) is taken prior to the remedial action (actually addressing the specific malfunction). Notice that locking the bolt to the rear bringing the charging handle forward and removing the magazine, while allowing gravity to work in your favor almost always solves the problem. Having your weapon system properly lubed, and having high quality components also can help prevent brass from really getting seriously lodged in a bolt override or charging handle impingement. If that does happen, the mortar technique may need to be applied as well as using your fingers or a multi tool to dislodge the malfunction. Practice solving these common malfunctions and the steps required to solve them so that you can maintain a level of proficiency. The last thing you want is to be in a situation where you fail to remember the steps to take to solve a malfunction while lives are on the line.
