When someone thinks of vigilantism, many may take to fiction to find examples. From the likes of Batman to The Punisher, the idea of someone, or a group of people taking justice into their own hands, to protect others has long been a topic of debate.

While some support the notion of criminals getting their just desserts, others are more concerned at the ramifications of the actions of those outside the justice system.

Today’s story looks at one such case. A real-life instance of vigilante justice that gripped West Germany on the 6th of March 1981. Was it justified? That’s for you to decide.
