MCWTD: Monday Coffee and Connecting with Yourself After Truama

Trauma can affect us in various ways, one of the common things many of us experience is feeling detached from ourselves. This detachment can be a defense mechanism used to protect against intense emotions and memories associated with the traumatic event or events someone has experienced, or is still experiencing and living with and through everyday.
While living with and in, or when out and learning to heal from, this trauma can cause a sense of disconnection from oneself often creating a feeling of being overwhelmed both emotionally and mentally in whatever you are going through or actively healing from. Navigating the state of dissociation caused by past or present trauma can cause the mind to detach from the present moment, leading to feelings of disconnection from one's own thoughts, feelings, and even at times physical sensations. For some emotional numbing is an active effect rather they do it intentionally or not, which results in a shutting down of emotions to protect them from feeling the intense pain and distress associated with the traumas they have experienced, this makes relationships challenging. Some of us struggle with the difficulty of self-reflection which affects our ability to reflect on our thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It is easy to see how this can lead to an extreme sense of disconnection
and impacts our sense of self and personal identity, causing feelings of disconnection from our own values, beliefs, life goals and at times even who we used to be prior or current. This can at times lead to conflicting thoughts and emotions, causing an inner conflict within yourself that can truly leave you feeling like you are battling yourself. All of these things can cause us to feel detached from ourselves disrupting our connection to our emotions, thoughts, and experiences. There should be no wonder at this point why these things can cause us to feel so lost within our own minds and who we are.
Seeking therapy and speaking to a professional therapist can provide a safe and supportive environment for some of us to process our traumatic experiences. While others choose to connect with a more personal source and build a support system through friends, family, or support groups that can help you feel less isolated and more connected to others in safe and balancing spaces. Engaging in mindfulness activities such as meditation and yoga can help as well, and for some, helps us become more aware of our thoughts and emotions through physical activities.
Self care and taking care of your physical and emotional well-being through activities such as exercise, healthy eating, adequate sleep, staying hydrated, all help improve your body's balance in this process of healing, and truly can help in you feel more connected to yourself through feeling connected to your body. One of the hardest parts of this process is not focusing on the past negatives. Practicing positive self-talk and challenging negative thought patterns can help you develop a more positive outlook on life, yourself and your future. Remember, detachment from yourself after trauma is a normal response and can take time to heal. It is important to be patient and gentle with yourself in the process of recovery and if you need some help remembering that, I am always here. The DollFAM has your back.
