Several states across the country are introducing legislation to ban “gender-affirming” surgeries and puberty blockers for children, from Utah to to Wyoming to Virginia.

One state that introduced a bill like this is South Dakota, where to many people’s surprise, these types of procedures are happening to minors. State Representative Bethany Soye introduced House Bill 1080, which has been nicknamed the “Help not Harm” bill. The bill would ban these drugs and surgeries for children, and allow patients who were harmed by those treatments to sue for damages: https://sdlegislature.gov/Session/Bill/24100

Similar legislation has surprisingly failed in the past. We explore the public-private / monetary interests in South Dakota at play.

Another state that just introduced a bill like this is Wyoming. State Senator Anthony Bouchard introduced “Chloe’s Law” which is named after Chloe Cole, an 18-year-old destransitioner. She was only 13 years old when a California doctor prescribed her puberty blockers. She was 15 when surgeons removed her breasts. She’s testified at hearings for bills all over the country. If this bill becomes law, a physician could lose their license if they perform these surgeries or prescribe these puberty blockers to children. It would also prohibit insurance coverage for these surgeries for minors: https://www.wyoleg.gov/Legislation/2023/SF0144
