We have been fascinated by the treasures found beneath Antarctica's frozen plains since the first explorers arrived there in the 1800s, and we continue to be so today. And that piques the interest of tech billionaire Elon Musk too. Antarctica is cloaked in mystery as the last untouched wilderness on earth and is excellent at retaining its secrets because it is a region of extremes. And so, what did Elon Musk secretly test here? Antarctica is uninhabitable for people due to the harsh climate, icy temperatures, and desolate terrain. The ice-covered continent, which makes up 90% of the ice on Earth, is roughly 1.5 times the size of the United States and is entirely covered in ice. Scientists have persisted despite this, finding bizarre natural phenomena, incredible creatures, blood-red waterfalls, and ancient fossils. Even better, they've managed to unearth a world beneath the ice, complete with subterranean salt lakes and a sizable mountain range. SpaceX has reached the other extreme, with the National Science Foundation (or NSF) testing out one of its Starlink terminals at McMurdo Station in Antarctica. OneWeb and SpaceX are competing to provide satellite internet coverage to the North Pole and other Arctic regions. Antarctica, the planet's coldest southernmost continent, has benefited from SpaceX's Starlink internet, which has expanded beyond McMurdo Station. In September 2022, the company announced for the first time that Starlink had arrived in Antarctica as a result of a National Science Foundation experiment. At the same time, the achievement signaled the expansion of the satellite internet network to all seven continents. Since there are no Starlink ground stations in the large and sparsely populated continent of Antarctica, those polar satellites must also use optical interlinks (lasers) to connect users to ground stations hundreds or thousands of miles away. Users are instead linked to the internet by means of space lasers that carry communications to and from ground stations in South America, Australia, New Zealand, and other nearby locations. Finding the oldest ice on Earth is the main goal of the Center for Oldest Ice Exploration (COLDEX) field experiment, which Starlink is supporting. Scientists can go back tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, or even millions of years into Earth's past thanks to that ancient ice. That ice can, most critically for the current era, hold startling amounts of information about the climate history of the planet. Drilling miles into Antarctic ice sheets is how scientists like Dr. Neff gather ice core samples. The information gleaned from those ice cores can show scientists how the Earth has responded in the past to both significant and minute climatic changes after being carefully removed, packaged, and flown to laboratories all around the world.
