When the Levites were chosen by God to serve Him the first command was to cleanse them. Then the water of purifying was sprinkled on them. Afterwards they were to wash their own clothing to make themselves clean.

Then offerings were made for them for their sins. After which God said, "After that shall the Levites go in to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation: and thou shalt cleanse them, and offer them for an offering...For they are wholly given unto Me from among the children of Israel." (Numbers 8:1-16).

So Aaron did his part as the high priest to cleanse and purify them. However, they had their own part to do by command. To continue on to be cleansed and to offer sacrifices of their sins.

Bottom line...

They had to be purified in order before they were even to enter into that sacred place of service to God. They themselves then became the offerings of God given to offer offerings.

They were set apart, sanctified for God. They were then gifted to the Aaronic Priesthood forever. Now that we are born again, we too are sanctified by the Pure Blood of Jesus Christ. Made righteous in His righteousness. And now we have become the temple of the Holy Spirit forever.

Paul the Apostle said, "Keep thyself pure." We all want to go to the pure sacred places in Christ. But if there is impurity in you, it will set you apart and away from Christ.

Jesus wants you to be pure but He will not do it all. He expects you to do your part with a fervent heart of wanting to enjoin yourself to Him in the purity of holiness. Then He will do His part to keep you pure and continue to take you into sacred pure places always with Him.

"I think God wants to make me pure gold, so He is burning out the dross, teaching me the meaning of the fire, the burnt offering, the death of the self-part of me."
