Russia's MiG-31 Foxhound Fighter Jets Moscow's Old Mach 3 Monster - The Mikoyan MiG-31 Foxhound is a supersonic interceptor aircraft designed for use by the Soviet Air Force. The aircraft was designed by the Mikoyan Design Bureau as a replacement for the earlier MiG-25 Foxbat.

Based on and sharing design elements with the MiG-25, the MiG-31 is considered one of the fastest fighter jets in the world. It continues to be operated by the Russian Air Force and the Kazakh Air Force after the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Russian Defense Ministry expects the MiG-31 to remain in service until 2030 or beyond.

A long-range supersonic interceptor, the MiG-31 Foxhound, a two-seat aircraft developed primarily for the Russian and Kazakh air forces, was derived from the MiG-25 Foxbat. The MiG-31's maiden flight took place in September 1975. Mikoyan is the designer and manufacturer of the MiG-31.
MiG-31 can operate efficiently in all weather conditions and simultaneously comply with visual flight rules (VFR) and instrument flight rules (IFR) day and night. It is equipped with state-of-the-art digital avionics. The MiG-31 was the first Soviet fighter to have true look-down and shoot-down capabilities.
-
Approximately 500 MiG-31 aircraft were produced, of which 370 were delivered to the Russian Air Force and 30 are in service with the Kazakh Air Force. The remaining aircraft have been upgraded to different variants under several upgrade programs. Only a portion of the Russian MiG fleet was upgraded to MiG-31BM standards under the upgrade program.
-
The MiG-25 Foxbat could not fly at low altitudes. The installation of inefficient turbojet engines led to a reduction in combat range at supersonic speeds, and an increase in the MiG-25's speed indicator led to the destruction of the aircraft's engine.
-
To overcome the disadvantages of the MiG-25 Foxbat, the MiG-31 was developed to fly at low altitudes at required supersonic speeds. MiG-31 is equipped with efficient turbofan engines with low bypass ratio, which allows to increase the combat range. Source (YT@Military-TV)
