In 1958, Mao Zedong's ninth year in power, he hoped to lead China out of its still medieval state of backwardness. So he launched a rapid industrialization program in both urban and rural areas to push China into a socialist paradise within fifteen years: this was the Great Leap Forward. However, this crazy idea has turned into a nightmare, leading 650 million Chinese people into the abyss of hell. China plunged into economic chaos, followed by a famine unprecedented in history. This had the shockingly tragic consequences of 45 million deaths.
