Eugene Trufkin: Stay Away from "Cage Free" and "Vegetarian Fed" Labels

"You want to stay away from cage free. At a commercial level, you do want to also stay away from free range," Eugene Trufkin told us on Monday, January 23.

"If you typically see on labels vegetarian fed, which is very common, this indicates that it's a confined operation... because chickens are obviously omnivores," he explained.

"This is what actually optimizes the nutritional profile of the meat, of the eggs..."

"And if they're given nothing but grains—which is what they're given if they're in a cage free or a free range environment—then once again, you're not feeding them a species specific diet, and the nutritional profile of that animal isn't gonna be optimized."
