The Civil War and how New Mexico played a pivotal role in strengthening the Union and not allowing the Confederates to take Fort Union and the ammunitions and supplies there just Northwest of Albuquerque, New Mexico. In early 1861, Texans overwhelmingly voted to secede from the Union and the state subsequently joined the Confederacy. As a result, when a side had to be chosen, much of the population of the New Mexico Territory sided with the Union. New Mexico Veterans Memorial
