Levitation Using Frequency

An array of 40 kHz ultrasonic transducers is used to levitate small styrofoam beads. The beads collect at the antinodes of the standing wave pattern. Shifting the phase of the upper array with respect to the lower array can move the beads up or down.The hemispherical shape of the arrays means there is also a sideways force holding the beads in place, so the whole device can be turned on its side.
