Watch Me FAIL A LOT at Goldeneye | NOW on Nintendo Switch + XBOX
In this episode, we fail a lot as we play through the first level, the Dam Level, on the Nintendo Switch version of 007 GoldenEye, the first time this game has been re-released in decades.
Back in the N64 era, one of the most influential games has to be GoldenEye. Developed by Rare, it introduced so many interesting and fun aspects to video games. Four-player multiplayer, get out of town! So many great characters and weapons to play with. The Golden gun! It seemed like it was something the N64 was absolutely built for. Originally released on the Nintendo 64 system in 1997, this classic first-person shooter packs in action, gadgets, stealth, and a memorable 2-4 player multiplayer mode.
In 2002, the video game world was shocked when Microsoft purchased Rare, eliminating one of Nintendo's closest third-party partners and making them a Microsoft exclusive. That meant many titles that were previously available on Nintendo systems would not be available in the future. Goldeneye was one such title. In addition to being a game from Rare that Microsoft now owned, being a movie tie-in meant that there were licensing issues as well. Since Goldeneye was released, MGM who owns the publishing rights to the James Bond franchise themselves was bought by Amazon!
In late 2022, Microsoft announced, with Nintendo, that Goldeneye would be coming back to home consoles. The Xbox version would be available through Gamepass and feature a 4K remaster, whereas the one for the switch would be a 1080p remaster. To play it on the Switch, you'll need the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members to access the game.
Initial thoughts:
I downloaded and tested the game on my Switch OLED, and I have to say there are so many things about this genre of games that have improved drastically over the years. I honestly think the play control on GoldenEye is terrible compared to what we've gotten used to with modern first-person shooters. The button presses just don't make sense anymore. With Goldeneye being developed in an era when you only had one analog stick on a controller, I would have loved to see them update the controls similar to what Capcom did with Resident Evil 2, 3, and four.
For controllers, I tested the Retro Fighters Brawler64 NSO Edition, the Nintendo Switch Pro controller, and the Switch N64 Online Controller, and I have to stay out of these three I preferred the Switch Pro controller the best. It felt the least twitchy and most accurate for my play control. The button layout also seemed to make more sense to me.
I'm glad that Microsoft and Nintendo could come together to bring this beloved game back to modern consoles. I'd like to see them do a little bit more work to optimize the controls for modern controllers, and perhaps that's something we could see in the future.
