Watch: City of Joburg Council Elects Councillor Thapelo Amad as New Mayor

Councillor Thapelo Amad with, Al-Jama-Ah party was elected as the new Mayor of Joburg with 108 votes.

This after DA mayor Mpho Phalatse was voted out of office in a motion of no confidence on Thursday. Phalatse was removed with 140 votes, with 129 opposing her departure.

On Wednesday, ActionSA released a statement lambasting the DA for throwing Phalatse under the bus.

The party accused the DA of allowing Phalatse’s political career to end and keeping an arrogant attitude towards coalition partners and the future of the City of Johannesburg.

On the back of that, today councillors have voted for a new mayor to serve the City of Joburg.

Prior to the vote, ANC’s provincial secretary Thembinkosi “TK" Nciza, said the party was supporting Thapelo Amad, the chairperson of minority party, Al-Jama-Ah, to become mayor.

Meanwhile, ousted Joburg mayor Mpho Phalatse has denied claims that she failed residents and was never there when they needed her during times of crisis.

The claims were made by opposition political parties who were instrumental in getting her kicked out of office
