When you feel anxious, your survival mode is switched on and so your brain is set up to scan the environment for danger. When you start to do this, you inevitably find more things to feel anxious about. The more you re-trigger the anxiety response, the more it can escalate into panic.

So when you notice you are scanning for dangers, for things that may or may not happen, gently guide your attention back to the here and now. Something in the present. You may need to do that a thousand times. That is ok. Keep doing it. The more you practice, the easier it becomes to choose where you focus your attention.
