Ohio Man Suffers Medical Event During OVI Stop

BELLBROOK, OH - On February 1st, 2020 at 5:00PM, Bellbrook Police received a call regarding a person drinking alcohol in a Dollar General parking lot. The officer followed the suspect from the store a few blocks away where the pursuing officer ran the driver's information and found that the suspect's driver's license was revoked and never reinstated. During the initial contact with the driver, the officer noted that he had slurred speech and that his eyes were glasslike. The suspect then stated that he needed to take blood pressure medication immediately. The officer told the suspect that he could take his medication after performing her tests and then asked the suspect to step out of the vehicle to which he did so.
Once outside the vehicle, the suspect performed the horizontal gaze nystagmus test. During the exercise, the officer noted that the suspect was unable to follow her pen smoothy and that distinct nystaggmus was observed at maximum deviation in both of the suspect's eyes. Soon after completing the test, the suspect grabbed his chest and stated that he did not feel well. The suspect claimed that he was having a medical incident and requested that an ambulance be called. The officer then called for a medic. The suspect claimed that he would be unable to perform any more tests and that he needed to sit down. The primary officer along with her sergeant helped the suspect take a knee on the ground as the paramedics were arriving.

After emergency medical personnel made contact with the suspect, he was transported to Miami Valley Hospital South where the suspect provided a urine sample to test for alcohol. The sample yielded a result of .266% BAC which is over three times the legal limit to drive in the State of Ohio. A search of the vehicle found that the suspect was in possession of an empty 24 oz beer can and a plastic cup with alcohol inside.
