Abandoned Yugoslav Fortress in Macedonia 🇲🇰

Skopje, the capital city of North Macedonia, previously known as just Macedonia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and sometimes FYROM, is overlooked by Kale Fortress, which is a beautiful looking fortress, especially with the awesome Macedonian flag swaying in the wind.

We took a walk to the entrance of Kale Fortress to find that the gates were closed, and behind the gates were some boulders, which we assumed were to stop us from getting into the fortress, making me think that it was now abandoned. I had visited this Yugoslav fortress a couple of years early and entered just fine. It’s free to get in and walk about Kale Fortress, and the views are amazing, as you can see right over the city of Skopje.

I pulled on the gate to the fortress and it just opened, enough for us to get through, and we just had to climb over the rocks. I therefore decided that this was now an abandoned fortress, which is technically correct as nobody lives there. However, you’ll see other people exploring Kale Fortress in the video, as it’s still a tourist site. We left via the correct exit, which is also the entrance, where there’s a small car park and a “guard”, who doesn’t seem to do much as it’s free to enter with no restrictions.

When I visited the fortress last time, there were some other things open, like in the glass building and so on, but this time, nothing was open, and everything was empty, leading me again to think that this is an abandoned Yugoslav fortress.

If you visit Skopje, be sure to take a walk around the walls of Kale Fortress, simply for the views.
