We travelled on an elektrichka to Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi to see the famous fortress which overlooks the Dniester Estuary, in Odessa Oblast of southwestern Ukraine, in the historical region of Bessarabia.

In this video you can follow us around the fortress and see what it's like to visit a Ukrainian fortress.

The town became part of the Principality of Moldavia in 1359. The city was known by its Romanian name of Cetatea Albă, literally "white citadel". Since 1944 the city has been known as "Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi", while on the Soviet geography maps often translated into its Russian equivalent of "Belgorod-Dnestrovskiy" (Бе́лгород-Днестро́вский), literally "white city on the Dniester".

The city's former name Akkerman is still extensively used as a nickname in informal speech and in local media.
