Street food in Malay village with locals 🇲🇾
Right in the middle of the huge city of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, you’ll find Kampung Baru which is a traditional Malay village which remains untouched by the sticky fingers of billionaires. The Malay people who own these properties all have to agree to sell, otherwise nobody can sell, meaning this area remains traditional, with views of the huge modern skyscrapers next door.
I met up again with Alvin, who is a Malaysian from Borneo as he wanted to take me here to Kampung Baru to try the Malaysian national dish, Nasi Lemak in what he says is the best place to get this typical Malaysian food within Kuala Lumpur.
I met Alvin on a bridge over the motorway and a river, which splits the Malay village from the city of Kuala Lumpur. We then headed down a lane so we could see some of the traditional buildings and houses, which all have a class view of the city.
We headed to the restaurant which Alvin stated had the best Nasi Lemak. This Malaysian dish included fried anchovies, coconut rice, chicken rendang, and a sweet chilli sauce. It was in fact, very good.
We then headed outside as Alvin wanted me to try this spicy fruit Malaysian street food, just outside, but still within Kampung Baru. The cheap street snack consisted of chopped mango, cucumber, pineapple and turnip, tossed in a sauce made from shrimp paste, crushed peanuts, brown sugar, chilli and water. It was very, very tasty, but not spicy at all.
We then had some mango smoothies which were excellent, followed by some fish paste wrapped in banana leaves, roasted right behind us.
Great experience, would recommend checking out Kampung Baru if you’re in Kuala Lumpur and want to see something slightly different.
