Eating BLOOD in Cambodia for breakfast 🇰🇭

Waking up early after very little sleep, to be taken to a local Khmer market early in the morning to eat congealed blood with a local Cambodian guy.

I met up in Phnom Penh with Kem who is a Cambodian guy who offered to take me around the Russian market in Cambodia’s capital city, which in the morning has a lot of Cambodian breakfast options. We checked out a few different Khmer breakfast options which consisted of meat, different noodles, a broth which could be spicy or bland and a lot of them contained the parts of the animal which isn’t always the most desirable like heart, lungs, intestines and even blood.

Obviously we eat blood in the UK as it’s part of our national breakfast, but it’s crispy and friend, whereas for this traditional Cambodian breakfast I had in Phnom Penh, it was congealed blood, which had the consistency of tofu, but didn’t have much flavour at all actually - the red curry surrounding the blood masked any sort of potential blood taste that it may have had.

Also within the Cambodian breakfast was different types of edible flowers, which was a bit strange to me, but I’m game for trying to eat pretty much anything - they tasted like flowers, exactly how I thought a flower would taste. Not too sure what the reason is for adding these, perhaps some nutritional value is added.

We walked around the market in Phnom Penh for a bit longer to check out what other stuff was available to Cambodians here at the Russian market, and spotted a lot of meat, dried fish, fruits, live and dead sea food, vegetables, clothing, toys and all other stuff - pretty much anything. Did you notice that it was pretty quiet considering there were a lot of people there? Isn’t it crazy how different cultures behave in public? I think so anyway.

I’m always interested to do something like this with a local, and Kem was a cool guy - had a great time with him. He even taught me a few words in the Khmer language.

As we exited the market in Phnom Penh, we had some dessert which was like a small cake covered in coconut milk or cream, but the cake thing was actually made from rice flour. This was fantastic, honestly. If you see it in Cambodia, try it. Very, very good Cambodian dessert.

In this video, me, a foreigner tries Cambodian food in Phnom Penh market at local Khmer market with Cambodian guy. Also you'll see me, a foreigner speaking khmer language to Cambodians at Phnom Penh market, whilst trying local khmer cuisine, checking out Cambodian market with a local khmer language speaker.
