Lisbon, Portugal is home to the Church of St. Dominic (Igreja de So Domingos in Portuguese). It has the designation of National Monument. The church, which was dedicated in 1241, was once Lisbon's biggest church.
Royal weddings in Portugal were typically held in the church before the modern Portuguese republic was founded in 1910.
The church, which once served as the Inquisition's headquarters, is where Jesuit missionary Gabriel Malagrida was famously put to death in 1761 after being charged with treason. The Lisbon Massacre, which saw thousands of New Christians (previously converted Jews) murdered by the Christian mob in 1506, took place in the church and the church square.
The Lisbon earthquake of 1531 caused damage to the church, and the earthquake of 1755 nearly destroyed it entirely. Though reconstruction started right away, it wasn't finished until 1807. A fire that started inside the church in 1959 caused further destruction. It took more than six hours to completely put out the fire, which claimed the lives of two firefighters and destroyed numerous priceless paintings and statues. The church reopened in 1994. During the restoration, many traces of the fire were still visible.
