DEWALT Vs Milwaukee

DEWALT updated the FlexVolt Reciprocating Saw and also introduced the 20-volt Power Detect Reciprocating Saw at about the same time.  With our FlexVolt video, linked above, coming out first, many people asked about the power and performance differences between the two DEWALT models.  While comparing, we also made a few fans very happy by adding in the Milwaukee FUEL 2721-20.  Interestingly enough, the Milwaukee FUEL 2721-20 is not Milwaukee's top dog that would be in the fight against the two top DEWALT Recip Saws.  The Milwaukee Super Sawzall would probably be a more fair fight, but the 2721 matches up much better with the DEWALT models.

Power Detect Vs Flexvolt

The introduction of the Power Detect 20-volt tools and the new updated FlexVolt tools seemed to happen at the same time.  Is that a coincidence?  We think not.  DEWALT has to update some of the FlexVolt tools in order for the Power Detect tools not to be as powerful as the FlexVolt tools.  Yes, the DEWALT Power Detect tools are that impressive.

One key difference we find when we compare the FlexVolt tools to the Power Detect tool is the runtime.  In very power-hungry tools, the FlexVolt tools have always had a shorter runtime.  The latest Power Detect tools have been able to supply that power and also provide very impressive runtimes to match.  That leaves everyone trying to decide if they want the most powerful tool or a very close second in power and more runtime.

DEWALT Power Detect DCS368

Reciprocating saws are not as easy to judge power differences with once they reach a certain level.  Like the DEWALT FlexVolt, the Power Detect model will bend a blade before you can get the saw to stall.  Even dropping the DCS368 down to a 5.0 Ah battery did not make the saw stoppable.  This new saw is very impressive.  But when you compare it to many others on the market, it is missing a few items.

Most other top tier recip saws have an orbital option that allows them to chew through wood incredibly fast.  The DEWALT saws both lack rafter hooks and adjustable shoes.  Both options are common and used often with reciprocating saws.  Many other high-end saws will give the user access to different max speeds to help them control cuts through different materials.  So is DEWALT behind the times not having these options on their recip saws?  Yes, DEWALT is needing to add something to this line to keep up with the Jones.  DEWALT still has a solid and powerful no-frills saw, just not one that everyone will run to the store to buy because of the lacking features.
