The invention of the Greenworks 24-volt line is very interesting. While Greenworks is a much larger company than what we think of it, the idea of Greenworks jumping into cordless drills and circular saws was something that I did not see coming. With the Powerall 24-volt tools, it makes sense for Greenworks to use a platform that they are good at and already have in place to make a 48-volt mower. My question was if this 48-volt mower would be as good of quality or would it drop to more of a DIY status of outdoor power equipment. It seems sad to use DIY as a designation for the low-end tool. The discussion as to why DIY is negative these days is a whole other story.
We were stunned to see the shipping info get delivered to us and see our mower in the box weighed in at over 81 pounds. Opening the box was refreshing as the packaging was great and the mower was very sturdy. At first look, you could put this mower next to any other Greenworks that cost more and the quality all looks the same.
As we dove deeper and deeper into this mower, it became clear that there is little or no difference in the quality of the mowers in the lower-end lines than the ones offered in the high voltages. That too is refreshing to see as the cost difference is very small also.
The idea of getting into a nice affordable lawnmower is appealing to many, but the downside of doing so with smaller battery setups is hot batteries. The draw from the larger mower motor will heat and drain batteries with a high amp load. The hot batteries will not charge right away and they will need time to cool. On this mower, between the thermal cooling and charge cycle, the wait to get out and mow again was slightly over 3 hours. The good news is that this mower will mow a 1/2 acre on one charge, so many can cut their lawn on one charge.
The two-by 24-volt system allows users to get into other 24-volt tools Greenworks is offering. Right now, those tools are pretty limited, but in the future, that might change.
Purchases of battery-operated mowers are a technology purchase, similar to that of a computer. When the technology changes, your investment is worth next to nothing, and battery purchases separate from tool kits are incredibly expensive. Buying into any battery-operated lawnmowee is currently pricing in a hearty premium for the convenience of no gas or oil. These $500 dollar mowers will not be around in 20-years. Many of them might not make it to 5 years without the purchase of new batteries.
