In the aftermath of World War II, the United States Navy conducted a series of dangerous experiments on their sailors in an attempt to gain greater insight into the effects of mustard gas on human beings. Despite being banned by international law, mustard gas had been used extensively during the war and there was a pressing need for more information about its impacts.

As part of these experiments, hundreds of Navy personnel were exposed to mustard gas without any prior warning or protection given. The effects of this exposure included excruciating pain and burning sensations on the skin as well as severe respiratory damage.
