Haunschild was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroic actions in support of the Afghanistan noncombatant evacuation during Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. Operation Freedom’s Sentinel was the continuation of the war in Afghanistan as part of the larger global war on terrorism. He served as the Marine air-traffic control mobile-team leader with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 162 (Reinforced), 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
