Alan Wake is a writer who is trying to finish his latest novel when he is attacked by a group of men who want to steal his manuscript. They tie him up in the woods and leave him for dead, but Alan wakes up with amnesia and no idea who he is or where he is from. He tries to find out what happened to him by talking to people who may have some information about him, but no one seems to know anything except that he was involved in some kind of crime.

Alan ends up in the small town of Bright Falls where he meets up with a local sheriff named Alice who helps him solve his mystery. Together they find out that Alan's manuscript is actually a manuscript about a town called Bright Falls that has been cursed by an evil presence known as The Presence. Alan soon realizes that he needs to find out more about The Presence before it's too late.
