The ghost that haunts this 18th century house in Alexandria doesn't take kindly to British visitors
Colonel Michael Swope was an unremarkable officer in the Colonial Army from Pennsylvania who was captured at the Battle of Fort Washington on November 16, 1776. He sat out the remainder of the war, and was eventually freed in a prisoner of war swap. Michael and Eva Swope moved to Alexandria, Virginia to run a ship chandlery, which is a store that sells maritime supplies. They lived at 210 Prince Street, which is today among the oldest surviving houses in Alexandria. Colonel Swope's ghost has long been rumored to haunt the 3 1/2 story residence. Swope was buried in Pennsylvania, but his family vault was disturbed in 1859 during a yellow fever epidemic. This seems to have aroused his spirit, and ever since, visitors and passersby have encountered cold spots and eerie piano music, although a piano is not inside the home. The specter of a colonial officer has also been seen. #virginia #alexandriava #hauntedhouse
