Why is housing so darn expensive?

If you live some place like California you may be struggling with the astronomical cost of housing. If you live in another red state you maybe dealing with the people who voted for the people who have caused this problem as they flee to your state to escape the disaster that they helped create. Either way I want to explain a little about why the cost of housing might be so high, and how I feel about it. What are your thoughts?
