However, after the war, the United States abolished the imperial system and patrolled the global oceans, making it possible for countries to trade for resources they lacked. This led to a period of industrialization and urbanization, with populations shifting from rural to urban areas. Urbanization led to fewer children and longer lifespans, resulting in a population column that was conducive to economic growth. However, this growth is temporary as birth rates continue to drop and populations age, leading to a lack of workers and consumers to drive the economy. Zeihan also argues that the end of the Cold War allowed for the structure of globalization to spread throughout the world, but this is now being threatened by the loss of security and demographic capacity to support it. He suggests that the world will have to return to a system where trade is focused on countries with better demographic and security infrastructure.
