El Salvador: Not what it seems?

Since moving to El Salvador we've had lots of questions, and some healthy skepticism. Some have asked us why we only seem to show the best of the country, but never the rough edges. Those thinking of travelling to El Salvador have seen Canada's revised travel advisory, warning Canadians to "exercise a high degree of caution" when visiting the country. Is El Salvador really a safe country, or is it not what it seems?
