We Need To Find This Or We Cannot Build

Today we are going to talk to you about the one thing that’s so important for our construction. In fact, we need to find this or we cannot build anything!

We are Douglas and Keri and we recently quit our jobs, sold everything, and in September of 2022 we took a leap of faith and moved onto our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our off grid homestead property from scratch with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey and our 16 y/o kitty, Boo.

We really need to find a place to get clay from to add to our hyperadobe bag mixture and it needs to be about 30% clay of the overall mixture. Douglas is going to take you down into our wash where you can clearly see how deep down the clay is from the vertical sides of the wash. Now we know that we should be able to dig near the wash to get down to the clay layer that we know is there.

The mix we are going for is 70% sand and 30% clay. We will use 12 parts of the sand/clay mixture to 1 part lime. The lime will slowly harden over time and will basically turn this mixture to rock eventually. These percentages and ratios are what we have come up with for our build and we are by no means experts in this, so make sure you do your own research and investigating on the topic!
