The Great Siege Tunnels at Gibraltar are located a little over half way up The Rock of Gibraltar. It is about a 45 minute steep inclined walk up from the city center. It's all paved road and steps up, but it is not an easy hike. You can also use the van tours located at Casemates Square and the van tours located outside of Gache Opticians (the oldest optician store in Gibraltar).

Admission to the site is included with your Gibraltar Nature Reserve day pass, which you can purchase at the Moorish Castle entrance. Or, if you are on a van tour, admission is usually included with the tour (be sure to check with your tour guide if you opt for the van tour and find out whats included).

The Great Siege Tunnels at Gibraltar offer a great historical experience, with history on how the tunnels were dug in the 1700's, why they were made, and the historical and cultural impact they have left on Gibraltar.

The tunnels are spacious and have lots of natural light. There is no need to be afraid or feel claustrophobic. There is plenty of natural air that passes through the window openings along the side. It is a 5-7 minute walk to the end if you don't stop to look at any of the historical kiosks or other items. Otherwise 15-20 minutes here is more than enough time to explore and see what you want!

The path along the tunnel is slightly inclined and declined depending which way you are headed, and the incline is very easy for anyone walking the path. There are some very short stairs, some only being 2-3 steps and others being 5-6 steps, so overall very easy as well.

From this location you get excellent views of Gibraltar International Airport (see @MinistryofFlightGibraltar ), La Linea Spain, and the mountains of Spain in the distance.

If walking or hiking up to this location is not something you can do, you can take a van tour. Those van tours provide access to several sites at the Rock of Gibraltar and last several hours. This is one of the stops, its easy, quick, and fun to explore and say that you went inside The Rock of Gibraltar.

Another option is to take the cable car up to the top platform and hike back down The Rock to The Great Siege Tunnels. Hiking down is easy but a steep decline. The cost for taking the cable car up and purchasing a nature reserve pass is about equal to taking the van tours. It just depends on what you would like to do.

My advice is to bring plenty of water and snacks with you if you are hiking or on the van tour. There are no services up here other than a water vending machine and an occasional ice cream truck. Just below the entrance to The Tunnels are restrooms with running water to wash your hands.

One final note is to please be cautious of the MONKEYS! At this location there are not so many, like at the Top of The Rock Cafe or the Glass Bridge, but you should still be careful of your surroundings. The monkeys are looking for opportunities to steal your back pack, your plastic bag, or any food you might be holding in your hand. See this video to see what I mean: https://youtu.be/YG1jyVEA-f4

Overall, this is an enjoyable experience while visiting The Rock of Gibraltar. It's a great opportunity to get inside The Rock of Gibraltar, and have incredible views of the Spanish Countryside and the Mediterranean Sea!
