Factors that contribute to zinc absorption and utilisation
There are various factors that may contribute to zinc absorption and utilisation:
• The main site of zinc absorption is in the proximal small intestine.1 Proper digestive function is beneficial to nutrient absorption.1-3
• High levels of copper may affect zinc absorption – zinc and copper are mutually antagonistic, both interfering with the absorption of the other in the gastrointestinal tract.2
• Plant sources of zinc are difficult to absorb; fibre and dietary inhibitors such as phytates can impair zinc absorption. Those consuming a high plant-based diet may have an increased need for zinc.1-3

Functions of zinc
Zinc is involved in nerve conduction, and is abundant in the central nervous system, particularly the presynaptic vesicles of excitatory neurons, thus helping in healthy nervous system function.4 Zinc and glutamate co-localise, suggesting that zinc has a regulatory role in the functioning of glutamatergic synapses, and regulating of inhibitory neurotransmitter function. Zinc also plays an antioxidant role in the body; acting as an important cofactor of superoxide dismutase, an endogenous antioxidant.4 Zinc is also an important antagonist of other minerals in the body, such as copper, assisting to maintain the balance of these minerals.2

The role of cofactors
• Neurotransmitter synthesis: P5P is involved in the synthesis of several neurotransmitters including serotonin, GABA and dopamine.3,5
• Antioxidant function: Manganese superoxide dismutase is found in the mitochondria and may help to eliminate superoxides before they damage mitochondrial function.6 Vitamin C is one of the most effective water-soluble antioxidants in the body and acts as a free radical scavenger, as well as protecting cells against oxidative damage.3
• Energy production: P5P and vitamin C play a role in cellular energy production.7
