Coldest Russian region takes -47 degree plunge to celebrate Epiphany
About as far from the pleasant warm waters of the River Jordan as you can get, residents of Yakutia have commemorated the baptism of Christ in a manner fitting for Siberia – plunging half-naked into icy water. Yakutsk is one of the coldest places in Russia, a whopping -47 degrees Celsius, but a frozen city pond is no match for the Russian Orthodox Church. Not that most people need an excuse, this is a daily pastime for the ice swimmer club, after all. Or at midnight, when it’s Epiphany. Wouldn’t want to let the water get too warm now, would we?
