Could plant-based vaccines save the world? Scientists say rice, corn, potatoes or lettuce can be used to produce antibodies. Bio-tech firms are already in clinical trials with their plant-based drugs or awaiting approval from health agencies - to combat ebola, the norovirus and COVID-19.

CROPS that yield huge quantities of vaccines have been brought a step closer by researchers in California who have used tobacco plants to produce an experimental vaccine against malaria. Though the researchers hope that the vaccine will prove useful, the main purpose of their experiment was to show how easy it can be to make vaccines in plants. They hope it might eventually be possible for people to vaccinate themselves against certain diseases simply by eating leaves from a vaccine-producing plant.

The altered tobacco plants were grown by Tom Turpen of Biosource Technologies in Vacaville, California. He says that vaccines from plants should be much cheaper and simpler to harvest than vaccines made in the conventional way, from broths of microorganisms in fermenters. And while most existing vaccines must be kept refrigerated, the plant-derived varieties could be stored and transported at room temperature, which should also be cheaper.
