Epiphany seems to be one of the greatest religious holiday of the year for Orthodox Christian. People go to the church to listen to the holy preaching and to get small bottles with the holy water (baptismal water, which is blessed by the priest). In many places, the priest leads the congregation to a local river or lake, which he blesses. The most interesting tradition is to go to the banks of the river, to break the ice and to jump into freezing water. Participants in the ritual may dip themselves three times under the water, honoring the Holy Trinity.

◾Many people do those “ice-bathing” every year and never become ill. Why? They believe that the water, which is blessed on January 19, has strong healing properties. It washes away the sins from the past and protects against disease and bad energy.
