Dowsing and Divining - A Treasure Hunter’s Guide* Teknetics Direct!
An intelligent person knows that a tomato is a fruit. A wise person knows not to include it in a fruit salad. That is my thought process when it comes to subjects such as dowsing. I feel that I am intelligent enough to not use it as my primary (or even secondary) tool in treasure hunting, but wise enough to not dismiss it entirely when I hear of others utilizing it with success.
I have seen far to many unexplained happenings in my 42 years of life to dismiss even the crazy sounding stuff. To most people, that is exactly what dowsing is - crazy stuff.
I once had a palm reader from a late night California TV show come into my place of work. Without being rude and calling her an outright liar, I told her that I simply did not believe she could read palms or tell the future. She gave me a wry smile and told me that was perfectly normal. Then she asked for me to extend my palm...
Long story short - she told me things only I could have known. Not the normal generalized knowledge that many “psychics” tend to feed the normal believer to make them ohh and ahh. The tidbits she provided were names and dates that could not possibly be guessed without knowing me on a very personal level. It was almost like she skipped the fluff and showed me the goods as if to say - who’s crazy now? To this day I cannot explain it, and to this day I always remember it before dismissing any outlandish claim as rubbish.
With that being said, I would categorize myself a skeptic of the art of dowsing. However, as you will see, there have been many a treasure located through this art. So what exactly is dowsing? Can it be used for treasure hunting? Has it ever been proven to work as described? Let’s dive into the deep end of weird and see what lies underneath the surface of normal.
According to Wikipedia - Dowsing is a type of divination employed in attempts to locate ground water, buried metals or ores, gemstones, oil, gravesites,[1] and many other objects and materials without the use of scientific apparatus. Dowsing is considered a pseudoscience, and there is no scientific evidence that it is any more effective than random chance.
So there we have it. No scientific evidence that it is more than random chance. However, many a gemstones and gold nuggets have been found by these random chance believers who utilize it. Perhaps we should take a closer look.
To employ dowsing techniques, a person can choose one of 3 different methods. All of them take concentration and a bit of intuition from the dowser.
Divining Stick: This is a Y-shaped stick (branch) with one of the forked sections in each hand, and the bottom of the Y point facing straight out in front of you. With a bit of concentration and meditation on the treasure to be found, the user walks around in the area where it is believed to be found. If the stick starts to wiggle or shake while walking over a specific area, the target is supposed to be underfoot. Or at the very least in the general area.
This method has been employed since Medieval times to find water wells and hidden treasures. The most common type of branch used? Witch-hazel of course...
Divining Rods: The second method is to use a pair of L-shaped divining rods. These are bent metal wires (like coat hangers) that you hold in each hand. If they start to point in a general direction together, that is considered pointing towards a target location. If they cross each other and make an X pattern, you are directly on the target itself and should investigate with a metal detector or shovel. This type of dowsing has been employed since the 1800’s in Europe, and it now the most common type of dowsing according to users.
Dowsing Crystal: This is called “map dowsing” and is done with a special crystal hung from a gold or silver chain. It acts as a pendulum as you hang it over a map drawing of an area. If the pendulum starts to swing or rotate in X or circular patterns, you are onto something. Dowsing with crystals is the oldest type of dowsing there is, and has been recorded in use as far back as 400 AD.
That is dowsing in a nutshell. The stick shakes, the wires cross, the crystal swings. It should be known that science dismisses all 3 of these techniques as nothing more than nonsense. All movements are said to be the brain telling the hands to move subconsciously. No magic. No special intuition. No 6th sense.
